They had to take supplies for two years - all their food, equipment, instruments, ponies, dogs, motor sledges, all the food for the ponies and dogs, a large hut, a spare hut (substitute in case of fire), and 300 tons of coal for the ship, and the base. In spite of this (and the extremely, and unusual, bad weather they had on the polar journey) the quality of their science was the best that had ever been done.
